PencilPALS (PALS = Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) is a joint program with the SAG Foundation that makes writing a first-person experience for elementary school children through the lost art of letter writing. Children share their thoughts about favorite books, school happenings and long term aspirations, through a letter writing exchange.
Through correspondence over a year with an adult mentor, each child has the opportunity to develop a sense of pride in his or her writing. There is also end-of-year read, meet, and greet where the actors and writers come to the school to read to the 1st and 2nd grade students and then meet their PencilPAL they’ve been writing to for the past year. We select a group of up to twenty-four high profile writers and actors to correspond with 4th and 5th grade classes in schools across NYC.
PencilPALS and its sister BookPALS program bring actors, writers, and talented performer volunteers into classrooms to cultivate in children a love of books and writing.
