For the Second Year, WGI Partners with the Black List To Identify Short List for The Michael Collyer Memorial Fellowship in Screenwriting
Note that this fellowship is for current undergraduate seniors transitioning into the professional world of screenwriting only who will graduate by spring/summer 2018.
We’re thrilled to announce for the second year, the Writers Guild Initiative’s Michael Collyer Memorial Fellowship (MCMF) in Screenwriting will source their short list via the Black List website. The MCMF is a one-year fellowship awarded to a undergraduate senior who plans to pursue a career in screenwriting on completion of his or her undergraduate degree in spring/summer 2018. The winner receives a $10,000 stipend to write an original screenplay and is mentored by a prominent screenwriter. This program, now in its 10th year is a partnership between the Writers Guild Initiative and the King Family Foundation, hosted by The Black List.
The MCMF specifically seeks diverse emerging voices and stories that are character-driven and personal in nature. Feature film scripts only; no shorts or TV pilots at this time.
Students enrolled in any degree program at any accredited college in the United States can opt into the fellowship. 2017 Michael Collyer Memorial Fellowship recipient Joe Walters (BY SHEL SILVERSTEIN) was “in a Radiologic Technology program at a technical college, you know, not film school,” when he won last year. Read more about his experience in his interview on The Black List Blog.
To opt in to the competition, please go to blcklst.com’s Collyer Fellowship Page, to read the submission requirements and submission agreement. There is a $100 fee for each entry ($25 to host and $75 for an evaluation). Evaluations are not required for this opportunity, but ratings from both reader evaluations and industry members on the site are beneficial to the selection process. You will need to host your script on blcklst.com for at least one week between 5/22/17 and 10/1/17 in order to be considered for this opportunity.
And… the first thirty students who opt into this opportunity on blcklst.com will receive FREE hosting and two FREE evaluations! (A FAQ for the competition can be found here.)
The deadline to opt in to this opportunity is October 1, 2017. Immediately thereafter, The Black List will choose a short list of fifteen screenplays to send to the Writers Guild Initiative selection committee for consideration. The Fellowship recipient will be selected by WGI by calendar year’s end. The winner may also have the opportunity to attend the Writers Guild Awards in New York City in February 2018.
